High Scoring In Saturday's Cricket Games
Saturday's games jn the HoroWhenua senior- cricket- championship were notable for some high scores. Most outstanding was an impressive innings by H. F. Rice, who was finally dismissed for 137. Lively Match At Otaki. A sparkiing 137 by H. F. Rice before he was caught out was a feature of a lively display at the Otaki Domain, when Otaki avenged their defeat by Old Boys the previous week with a convincing five-:Point win over Levin. D. Harper (39) and B. Wallis (10) were two others with double figures who contributed to Otaki's fine total of 232 for six wickets. For Levin, Lambert (82) , Hudson (66) and Law (17) were batsmen who turned in ibright knocks and Levin's total of 187 earned commendation. Bowling for Otaki, McHaffie took six for 55 and Heatherwick three for 39. Scott's two for 14 was the best bowling average for the. visitors.
Easy Win For Weraroa. With first use of the wicket in their game against College, the Weraroa batsmen put 158 runs on the board for nine wickets. The highlight of the innings a'nd the game was a con vincing 61 by.P. Jukes before being clean bowled by G. Ball. S. Weller (26), R, Keenan (15), B. Harvey (11) and I.\ Marton (10) were the other double figure scorers. Four of the wickets fell to G. Andrews at a cost of only 43 runs, while Ball took two for 16. The College batsmen failed to make a stand against the Weraroa bowling and were dismissed for 55. G. Andrews (16) and G. Ball (11) were the only double figure scorers. Excellent bowling figures were returned by A. Saunders, who accounted for five of the wickets •at the very low cost of 13 runs. K. Hudson and J. Ryder each captured two.
Old Boys' Narrow Win. Old Boys" won their match against Shannon at the Levin •Domain' by the narrow margin of one run. Old Boys were first to bat, being all out with a total of 111. The highest scorers were A. Judd with 18, R^Stevens 16, P. Frederikson 14, J. Dome 12, J. Lancaster 11 and P. Hannan 11 (not out). The bowling ave'rages were: Harris four for 35, Roach four for 25 and Fuller two for 27. K. McEwen (25), McNeile (24), G. McEwen (21) and Thomson (13) were the main contributors towards Shannon's total of 110 runs. For Old Boys, E. Barraud brightened the bowling scene by collecting five wickets for 16 runs. Three wickets fell to Hannan for 24 and one to Stevens for 36. EIGHT POINT WIN TO KUKU JUNIORS
With a decisive win over CoLege B last week, the Kuku juniors went on. to claim another eight point win over Foxton on Saturday. Batting first, Foxton failed to make a stand and were dismissed for 30. J. Horn accounted for four wickets at a cost of eight runs, while L. Holder took three for 3. Kuku replied with 47, J. Horn (14) and L. Holder (12)' being the only batsmen' to get among the runs. Brotherson and Lay each captured three wickets. Foxton fared even worse in their second" visit to the wicket * and were all back in the pavilion for 19. H. Moore, Horn and Holder were responsible for the collapse. Requiring only two runs for _ an eight pointer, Kuku had no difficulty. J. Ellison and Horn opened and the former notched five runs to end the game.
