Big Cargo Of French Petrol For Australia
Received Friday 8.55 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 4. Mr Chifley announced today from Canberra that the French Governmeut has approved the export of two petrol | eargoes to Australia totalling 9,000,000 J galllons or 30,000 tons. He added: I The Australian Government has been advised that at present France has only a small export trade in petrol going principally to her own colonies. The grant of French export licences is dependent on circumstances obtaining at the time of application. The French authorities are reported to have stated that any availabilities couJd not form the basis of a regular export trade." The Sydney Sun's -Canberra; correspondent says that though the production of crude oil is a United StatesBritish monopoly "into this hitherto tight preserve France appears to be trying muscle. France wants to earn dollars. But also has sterling difficulties, and is not above earning sterling to finance such purehases as wool from Australia."
