AUCKLAND, Nov. 3. The beiief that to safeguard the Domiuion in the midst of a hungry and envious world it should- be devoloped and populated, so that instead of 1,750, 000 it would liave 5,000,000 people in a few years' time was expressed by the Minister of Works (Mr Semple) m an address in the Gaiety Theatre, Otahuhu, tonight. Mr Semple was given a rousing reception by an atteudance of about 600 whieh packed tho -theatre. The Mayor of Otahuhu l(Mr A. Murdoch) was chairman. Replj-ing to criticism- • of the. losses suffered by the raihvays, Mr . Semple said that the only trme the railways Kad ever made a prolit was in 1944, and that- was because of wartim.e "freights. However, electrification tvould overcome the liigh cost of imported fuel.
