ROTORUA, Nov. 3. ^ The fishing seasoxi in the Rotorua and Taupo districts opened on Novomber 1 with a ratlier dull yet particularlv favourable atmosphere for iishiug, sa'id the ' "onservator of Wild Life (Mr A. A. M.cNamara ) today. Ile said that a fairly large number of fish had been taken, but their condition, however, wus noi as gof rl as expected. A reasonable number of well-eonditioned young trout were taken and all reports to date indicated that fi very large uuniber of young fish are at present in all the streams. A partv of anglers fishing Lake Tarawera secured 10 fish, and the largest of the 11 retained Weighed 141b. Reports from Taupo indicated that a number of limit. bags were taken from Ihe Taupo Bav-AIine Bav urea. The iuajority of these were young and wellconditioned with a sprinkling of lialfmended fis'h which were put bxvck. Trolling partics appeared to have done better in the western bays area than flv fishermen, and reports indicated that the fish taken there were in reasonably good condition. Mr. McNaniara said two years ago the Department of Internal Affairs had carried out a fertilisation sclienie in tlie shallows and small bays of Ihe Jakc, and this had produced wonderful results. As welJ as carrying out the fertilisajtion scheme in Lake Tarawera the Department had liberated a considerable quantity of fmgerlings from tlie hatcheries. Anglers had feported that a large number of these were in the lake. They weighed up to over two pounds and tlie anglers said that these had not been seen in Lake Tarawera for the past 20 years. Reports from the Bay of Plenty showed that some very nice young fish had been taken from both the Waimana and Waioeka, and it was antieipated that fishing there would improve from now on. A magnificent rainbow weigliing 1% Ibs. was taken at Lake Olcataina on the opening morning. The average was about 541bs. Fishing in Lake Okataina should provide very good sport this season, said Mr. McNaniara. There were no reports yet from Tokaanu or of the Taupo and Tongariro Rivers.
