High Living Costs Aroad
Brandy at 4s a iiip and apples at' ls eaeh are prices paid by local residents who have recently returned from holiday visits overseas. Mr. and Mrs. E. Perry, of Plimmer Terrace, arrived home on Tuesday evening after spending ten weeks in .Atistralia. They re^port a very enjoyahle trip and excellent weather conditions throughont their holiday. Living ; costs in Sydney are - very high, states Mh Perry, especially for fruit and vegetables and also for luxury lines. Apples were selling in Sydney shops at 4d"to ls each and cigarettes were 3s 8d for a packet of 25. Although Mr. and Mrs. Perry enjoyed their holiday, they are pleased to he hack in New Zealand and especially Shannon. High prices for luxury lines were also reported by Mr. Lars Beck, who recently returned from a vhnliday visit to his natlve Denmark. Although the standard of . living in that country is good ami their recovery from war effects fe progressing very well, high prices are paid for articles not manufactured in Denmark. In the higher class restaurants meals were expensive and brandy was sold for 4s a nip. Mr. Beck made the trip both ways by air and spent a most enjoyable holiday. He, also, is pleased to be back in New Zealand.
