The 1949 World Series, annual fall baseball classic between the champions of the American and National Leagues, the two "major" professional baseball leagues in the United States, for the championship of the nation, began on October 5, 1949, at Yankee Stadium, in New York City. Participating teams were the New York Yankees, champions of the American League, and the Brooklyn Dodgers, champions of the National League. The Yankees and the Dodgers emerged as winners in their respective eight-team leagues after gruelling 154-game schedules. The closely-contested 1949 league championships were not decided until the final day of the regular season. The photograph shows Phil Rizzuto, shortstop of the New York Yankees, leaping high into the air to catch the ball, thrown by. Yankee catcher Berra, as Harold (Pee Wee) Reese (No. 1) of the Brooklyn Dodgers slides safely into second with a "stolen" base. The second base umpire( in dark suit) is Art Passarella.
