Devaluation Raises Price Of British Goods

Received Midnight Monday SYDNEY, Oct. 31. New So'utli Wales importers say that ^ de valuation is precipitating an. unprecedented price spiral on British goods ixnported to Australia. The president of the New South Wales Wholesale Importers' Association (Mr J. Aucher) said prices had risen in all countries which had devalued their currencies. He added that many British exporters tradmg with Australia were adopting the unusual course of quoting commodi--ties ' ' suh ject to prices at date ot delivery. ' ' British manufacturers ' quotations for yams and piece goods for delivery in fonr months had alfeady appreciated 10 per cent on pre devaluation prices. Leadmg importers predict that by the end of 1949 Australians will be payihg nearly 25 per eent more for, almost every imported article of household importance.
