Huge Defence Bill Signed By Truman
Received Sunday, 8.50 p.m. WASHINGTON, Oct. 29. President Truman today signed the defence appropriation which includes 1,000,000,000 dollars to arai the North Atlantic Pact countries. Mr N. Halahy, chairman of the Military Production and Supply Board of the Atlantic Pact nations said another step forward would he made when the hoard met in London on Tuesday. One of the hoard 's major jobs would be to determine what each memher nation possessed that could be used in the integrated defence scheme. President Truman today signed the 15,585,863,498 dollar military spending Bill, hut froze 615,000,000 dollars of it which Congress had provided to expand the Air Force to 58 groups. Congress put an extra 615,000,000 into the 1,050,000,000 dollar military spending Bill over the previous ohjections of Presidbnt Truman who favoured a 48 group Air Porce. President Truman said today that increasing the structure of the Air Force above the Budget recommendation would be inconsistent with a realistic halanced security programme and would upset orderly planning for the three services. He added that he therefore directed the Defence Secretary to place the extra money in reserve.
