Last Of An Old Bridge. All that remains of the old railroad bridge across the Whangaehu River is being demolished, and in the near future nothing will remain of a structure which was once an imporlant link in. the main line between Wellington and _Wanganui. AfteT the old railway over the Turakina and Whangaehu hills was- abandoned in f favour of the tunnel route and 'its easy grade, track gangs removed" rails and girders of the old Whangaehu bridge leaving only the concrete piers, On behalf of farmers in the locality, however, Mr. L. A. Mackintosh, Wanganui county representative on the Rangitikei Catchment Board, complained that the piers were arresting large quantities of driftwood and other debris, with the result that the flow of 'the river was being diverted and causing erosion along the banks. Representations. were made to the Railways Department, and at the board's monthly meeting recently, Mr. Mackintosh repor-ted ,that a start had been made with blasting away the old piers.
