Youth Drowned In River

WANGANUI, Oct. 30. A youth was drowned in the Wanganui River today when a 13-foot flatbottomed boat carrying a sail was swamped above Aramoho at about four o'clock. He was: — ANDREW HOPE, aged 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Hope, Tay Street, Aramoho. The body had not been recovered at nightfall. Tlie t'liree other oecupants of the boat were Peter Bassett, Ken Belford and Ronald Small, all about the same age as Hope. The boat overturued in choppy water and a strong westerly wind. Small made a plucky effort to assist Hope but failed to save him. Bassett and Small swam ashore but Belford, who clung to' the upturned boat, was rescued by a passerby, Mr. A. Maddock, of Makirikiri, who obtained another boqt and rowed out to Belford 's as* sistance.
