Reward.
The New Zealand Government will soon recompense two Europeans for helping members of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. dunng World War II. Both will receive ex gratia payments of £40. The awards are provided for in the SupplJementary Estimates introduced in the House of Representatives iast night. One payment will reimburse a Swiss^ who helped an officer escape from Italy. The other is to provide an artificial leg for a Cretan who assisted New Zealand servicemen during the campaign on Crete. Carriers Must Be Modern. /Carriers handling lime and fertilisers must advance with the times and fit their trucks for bulk deliveries to .farms, said Mr. E. J. Phelan,. the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority. If, however, carriers adhered to obsolete methods he would have -no option but to grant new lieences for those using methods elimiiiating bagging and handling. Delivery .in bulk would save £1 per tqn according to evidence h.eard. e'arlier. He asked the Master Carriers' Association to advise its members accordingly. Many New Classrooms. By the' end of the year the Auckland Education Board will have built 240 ciassrooms, an average of one room for each working day. The total would have been higher, but for the earpenters' dispute. Permanent ciassrooms number 121 and prefabricated rooms 119. Ciassrooms built in Maori schools are not included. Papatoetoe West school was increased by 13 rooihs but the greater part of the work was spread over a large number of schools.
