Houses Moved Off Their Foundations

fteceivea Thursaay, lU.ciU p.m. RABaUL, Oct. 20. Rabaul and surroiinding districts were rocked at 7 a.m. today by the worst earth tremors since the disarstrous '.quake of 1932. Damage to property, however, was not great and there were no easualties. Besidents of Rabaul rushed into I the open during the 'quake which ! lasted about one minute. The ] worst damag.e is reported at ' Kokopo, 30 miles south of Rabaul. There many houses were moved off their foundations. Tanks were thrown off stands and erockery and glassware valued at hundreds of pounds, broken. On the Kokopo-Rabaul road, a landslide buried three motor trucks but the native drivers escaped uninjured. Goods crashed from the shelves of stores in Rabaul and the harbour bottom lifted. Frightened by the tremors, 'the^ natives "went bush" but later returned. At the Vanapore Mission Hospital, the X-ray plant and other i valuable eqpipment was badly damaged.
