All Waikato Mines Were Idle Yesterday
AUCKLAND, Oct. 20. All the main coal mines, underground and openeast, in the Huntly distrift, were idle today while ? mass meeting of the Northern Miners ' TJnion was lield in the Huntly Town Hall. The loss of coal production was about 3500 tons. Several hundred miners, less than half the union membership in the district, are estimated to have attended the meeting which lasted from 9 a.m. to about 1.45 p.m. No announcement was made on behalf of the miners after the meeting but it is understood nothing was raised which will prevent work at the mines tomorrow. This was the first mass meeting of miners to be held on a working day for over two years. It is understood a resolution was carried by 207 votes to nine, to the eflect that the men ask for a meeting of district miue managers and district executive of the Northern Miners' Union, with a representative of the Mines Department, to be held before next Friday, to discuss the Renown dispute.
