Allocation Of State Rental Houses
^ During the quarter ended September 30, 1949, 290 State houses were let or re-let throughout the Wellington, Manawatu, Wanganui i and Wairarapa districts. Of thpse tenancies 134 were granted to applicants eligible for the preference extended to certain classes of ex^ervicemen' and 156, including 22 units specially built for pensioners, were allocated to civhians. The civilian allocations were made. in the following towns: — • Wellington 96, Palmerston North 21, Feilding 6, Levin 6, Foxton 2, Wanganui 9, Taihape 1, Masterton 7, Eketahuna 2, Carterton 1 and Otaki 5. During the quarter 861 new applications were lodged in the above districts for State tenancies, 627 being from civilian applicants and 234 from ex-servicemen. The total number of unsatisfied applications on hand at the close of the quarter was 12,090 of which 8627 were for ciyilians and 3463 from ex-servicemen. The number of State rental houses already completed in the above districts is 9284 and 1379 more hquses are in the course of construction. From the inception of the Government's present housing scheme up to September 30, 1949, 30,408 new tenancies have been made available throughout the Dominion to applicants in both the civilian and "the ex-servicemen's categories. .
