R.- ,S." Aritclif£ ' He "further * recbminended that the matter be given' urgency. Tlie ;discussion arose out of an applicatibn for the ereetion of a builder's" worksliop on the Thayford subdivisibn. Cr. Anteliff's sug;gestion was to. bfing in'to being "sonie scheme to' prevent the overl'apping of industfial buildings with- residential areas. The Deputy-Mayor, . NDr. R. A. Frederiksqn, said ""that he was not aitogether in f avpur of town planning scliemes. An act had been on the S.tatute Book since 1926 giving' p.dwer to "bring in sucli schemes, bu'u oiily about four lpcal bodies had used it. There must,' therefore, be something wrong with it, he added. It was as the town clerk had stated previousiy, a case of all or nothing when it came 'to town planning. The costs were terrific, but what were the benefits? The council ha'd had opinions of town pianners before. "We have instances of town planning here. Look at Goldsmith Crescent — super planned, yet it does not make sense. We have a horse shoe bending away from the town with bottleneck sections. Look at the Cambridge Street State houses." " He agreed that if a sub-committee was set up to investigate the whole posi-' tion, it might make progress hy a revision of the by-laws to suit the council's purppses. It would certainly be cheaper. It was decided to appoint the following as the sub-committee: The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, and Crs. Antcliff, A. W. Parton and D. J. Sweetzer.
