, Contending. Ahat^he subsidy of £2 for £-1. granted by the Government for the Manawatu Catchment Board's project of improving the course of the Tokomaru River was inadequate, a conference of •board represeritatives and delegates from the Manawatu-Oroua River Board and Makerua Drainage Board had decided to register a protest to /the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council, said the chairman, Mr. W. McKay, when 'he reported the activities of the conference to the board on Tuesday. The conference was advised that the project, the estimated cost of which was £20,500, would be financed at the rate of £2 for £1 instead of £3 for £1, as requested. It was decided to recommend the prosecution of the work by the river board on the £2 for £1 basis, the movers being Messrs J. B. Crystall aml S. H. Claridge, contended Mr. McKay. A 'further decision was that an approach be made to the council to •ascertain whefher the unsubsidised portion of the cost of the work could be advanced as a short term loan by the council. The report was adopted.
