Keen Market Demand For New Potatoes

Messrs Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that N.Z. grapefruit was slighfly easier together wi'th tree tomatoes. However, N.Z. manderines were in strong demand and 85s was realisecf for an inferior line. Hothouse tomatoes are to hand and values are still very attractive. Kumeras realised up to 40s for a sugar bag. There was a particularly strong demand for spring cabbage, cauliflowers, choice lettuce and pumpkins. Owing to short supplies, new potatoes are in exceptionally strong demand, all other vegetables realising very good values. Heavy consignments of flowers have resulted in a slight deerease in values. Yardings of poultry at increased values, however, are still | most attractive. Quotations are as follows: — Vegetables: Asparagus, 2s 7d to 2s 9d; broad beans, ls 3d; peas, Is ld to ls 7d all per lb.; new season's beetroot, 23s; spring cabbage, 4s to i5s; lettuce, 10s to 20s; leeks, 8s to 9s 6d; rhubarb, 12s to 15s; silver beet, 4s to 9s; spinach, 6s to 12s cases; new potatoes, ceiling price; new season's onions, wanted; hot house cucumbers, ls 6d to 2s 9d each; Ohakune carrots, 23s cwt.; radish, 2d to 4d; parsley, 4d to ls; mint, 4d to .6'0 all bunches; cauliflowers, 12s tc 25s; pumpkins, tOs to 80s; parsnips, 10s to 12s; swedes, 3s to 6s per bag; kumeras, 30s to 42s sugar bags; marrows, wanted. Flowers: Poppies, ls to 4s; dianthus, 9s per gross; polyanthus, 3d to ls; lily of valley, 12s to 16s; carnations, 10s to 20s per dozen bunches; tulips, 2s 6d to 4s 6d per dozen blooms.
