Local and General

Pcrsonal. Mrs. A. E. Watlington, of Mill Road, is on a short holiday visit to Wellington. Mr. Earl Walsh, of Matene Street, who has been visiting friends in the Wairarapa, has returned to Otaki. While proceeding to Hawke's Bay at the' 'weekend, Mr. H. Jacob, of Otaki Railway, and his passengers had a fortunate escape from serious injury. The steering of the car they were in collapsed and the vehicle left the road. Luckily, apart from a few cuts suffered by Mr. "Fifi" Winiata, members of the party were uninjured, although badly shaken. Mr. W. H. Ralph, of Mill Road, recently paid a short visit to Wellington to meet his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. Swanson, Paraparaumu, who had been touring with the All Blacks 'in South Africa. Apart from a bout of malaria which overtook Mr. Swanson, the trip proved most enjoyable. Nevertheless the tourists were glad to return, stating that they had seen no "green grass" from the time they left New Zealand until their return.

More State Houses. Men, machinery and material have been noticed busily engaged on the site in Kirk Street where a further small block of State houses is to be erected. Labour Weekend Activities. Already attractions for the weekend are toeing featured. At Manakau on Saturday night a grand dance has been arranged by the I.O.O.F. Lodge, with the Tuis marching team staging a dance in the same hall on Labour night (Monday). At Tasman Beach on Monday, a free bus will take patrons to a sale of work in the Beach Hall, arranged by the Beach Ladies' Guild.

Card Evening Successes. Two card evenings held recently were favoured with good attendances. The Otaki Railway Bowling Club held an evening in the club's pavilion, when prize winners were Mrs. R. Bills and Mr. J. Poutama. The Rebecca Lcdge held its evening in the Band Hall, winners on this occasiop being Mesdames H. Arcus, R. Bills and H. Cole (firsts), and Mrs. L. Housiaux and Miss R. Royal (seconds) .
