More Clubs Hold Official Opening Ceremonies
The Caledonian Tennis Club's official 'opening for the 1949-50 season took place at the 'club courts, Stuckey Street, on Saturday afternoon. The president, Rev. A. Salmond, indicated improvements that had been made by friends of the club and appealed to members to take a priue in the condition of their property. Mr. W. Duguid served the first ball, after which doubles were played on the two courts. Afternoon tea was served by. the members to players and their friends. Ohau's Function. At the official opening of the Ohau Tennis Gub on Saturday, the patron, Mr. C. Saint, welcomed all members and wished them a successful season. He said he felt sure that this season would see a marked improvement in the club's appointments, with a consequent rise in the club's status. He hoped that the resultant effect would be an increase in menibership and produce added enthusiasm from the present members. Ao the conclusion of his speech, Mr. Saint served the first ball and declared the season open. Women members then dispensed afternoon tea and the remainder of the afternoon was spent in games. At Weraroa. "The club now has a membership of 45 and of that number a large percentage are active members," said the president, Mr. P. Dey, when speaking at the official opening of Ihe Weraroa Tennis Club on Saturday. Continuing, Mr. Dey said that the club had had a successful and enjoyable season last year. This season he hoped would see an improvement in the club's activities and with a succession of good seasons in the future a noticeable rise in its status. Prior to hitting the first ball to open the 1949-50 season, the patron, Rev. G. B. Stote-Blandy, welcomed the members and wished them success throughout the coming season. He then invited the club captain, Mr. E. Lyons, to a challenge match, which he won 3—1. Reporang on last season's activities, Mr. Dey said that the club had been successful in the C grade , inter-club competition. The -iwinnera vtQf . the club compeutions were: — Handicap singies, women: Mrs. T. Elliott; men: Mr. D. White; rnixed doubles: Mr. Lyons and Miss S. Stevens. During the winter club members have laid out and prepared a new court, making three courts in all. Besides allowing more players to take part in games, the additional court will enable the club to cope with the increasing membership.
