Let's Try To Get That Permit For Baths

With the swimming season approaching raprcLy, attention is again focussed on the Levin Swimming Club's weather-beaten request — an extension to the Coronation Swimming Baths. The club members will no doubi rally round and help with the work, but cement is the big worry. The Government has always advocated swimming being taught to everyone from school children of tender agts upwards, but from the Building Controller's reception of applications from both the Borough Council and swimming club, it would appear that the authorities are not prepared to extend their enthusiasm to practical help in providing the facilities. With such international events as the Olympic Games and the British equivalent, the Empire Games, as an impetus to young swimmers to reach top standard and put their country on the map, and the basic function of clu'os to train people to save lives and teach as many people to swim as possible, it is imperative that the facilities .are available. Permits ' are, after all, granted for much t less important work, and it is sma'll centres such as Levin that have the greater need. It was pleasing, therefore, to note at Monday night's meeting of the Levin Borough Council that the council at least is still alive to the urgency of the request. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. R. A. Frederikson, said: "This seems to be the season for permits. I think Lt is time we renewed the appli:ation for an extension to the

swimming baths." The cement and steel position seemed to be better and although there might not be a chance of getting the work done before the season opened, it could be 'done immediately it closed. The decision to again apply for the permit was carried unanimously by the council. It is ' to be hoped that the council will make more than just a formal application for re-con-sideration and press solidly for the releaso of the reqnlred mnterials.
