Explosion In Bellona's Gun Turret Injures Five
WELLINGTON, Oct. 17. One ofiicer and five ratings were injured in the explosion in one of Beilona's forward gun turrets on Friday night. The ship was taking part in ■ exercises wLh the Australian fleet when the expiohon oecurred. The injured men were: Lieutenant s G. M. Holden (Auckland ) , Afele Seamen E. Glasscock (Takapuna, Auckland), M. Aranga (Wairoa) and P. Cook (Te Aroha), and Ordinary Seamen I. W. A. Rodgerson (Lyttelton) and H. J. Ireton (New Plymouth). The men, who are in the sick bay of the Bellona in Jervois Bay, were reported by the Navy OfAce j in Wellington today to be out of j danger of aLer effects resuiting from possible shock. It is stated that during the night a shot of cordite in one of the cartridge cases was not fully] consumed on firing. As the breach ' of the 5.25 gun was opened the remaining cordite was ignited by j the inrush of air, six men near- ' est it being burned. There are normally abouo 12 men on duty in a gun turret during a shoot.
