Christian Standards Of Living
"The ideas wa expfess and the opinions we echo are often hot a whit different from the ideas and opinions of those who iive and act and speak as if God had "not spoken to mankind in Jesus Christ," said Rev. A. Salmond, preaching in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Levin, yesterday. "For a Christian the chief end of man is not spending power. That is a frank denial of the teaching of the catechism, which states that man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him for ever. A standard of living dominated by the ceaseless demand for luxury and amusement is the standard of a people enslaved to an internal hond^ge, much rhore terrible than external control. Harsh external control is but the flnal stage of the fatal social disease which that.domination brings on. "For the Christiah there is no easy way of escape from concern with this matter of the standard of living," continued the preacher. The Christian way involved deliberate and personal sacrifice . of time, energy, and money in order that the lives of others could be enriched. Giving rather thap getting was the main factor in a Christian's standard of living, concluded the preacher.
