v AUCKLAND, Oct. 14. The mysterious death of aman on board the New Zealand Shipping Company 's. new liner Rangitoto on her first night in port provided,a puzzle for the Auckland police tonight. The man, aged about 35, was found unconscious bh the stewards.' mess deck at 8 p.m. with a deep gash in his head, and al though he received atlention he was dead whep the police arrived. A meniber of the crew who had been with aeveral :otfefers ^ 'a'^fearby cabin founp the injijlred -mmK \'fSisterf E. ^o^e,- a member of the ship 's company, bandaged the man *S head and felt a slight pulse. Shortly afterwards the poliee anii ambulanse arrived, but the man was then dead. ; None of the ship's company is reputed to have heard anvthing before the finding of the body. The man was not recognised as a member of the ship '8 company, and it is not known how he came to be on boacd the ship. He was dressed like a seaman. There was a pool of blood at Hie bottom of the i'roh -gangwav leadins 'lawn to the iness deck, and tahere were spots of blood about the corridor. . . The Rangitoto, which is on her • maiden voyage, arrived at Auckland • from Wellington this mo.nlng.
