No weapon was ever more outlawed for humanitarian reasons, but only beeause it Was ihefficifent as exemplified by poison-gas, said Admiral Chester Nimitz in a statement read to the House Armed Services Committe which is investigating defeUce uniflcation. The former Chief of Naval Operations added that he questioned the efficiency of longe-range atomie bornbardment. "There can be no doubt that the atom bomb is the most. terrible weapori of great destruction ever coneeived, but that does not make it an efficient Weapon of war. It cannot be pinpointed and the chauees afe that its greatest datoage will fall on non-combatants. " Admiral Nimitz said the atom bomh'g most effeetive and efficent role might be as a major deterreiit to Eussian aggression. fie added that it was neeeseary to maintain a powerful navy Which must be equipped with stiper catriers. Admiral Nibitz was supported by another retired naval leader, Admiral R. A, Spruance, who eommanded the Fifth Fleet in the Pacifie. He said in the event of war with Russia the Navy'S biggest job would be to destroy the Soviet's subm&rines. A powerful naval air fLim would be aeoded for that job.
