Australian Petrol Shortage May Continue

CANBEBEA, Oct. 14. A high Commonwealth authority said Australia's petrol reserves for defence •were 50,000,000 gallons and that the Government 's military advisers had recommended against any depletion. Tn the House of Eepresentatives Mr. Chiflev said that beeause some States might not be able to pass legislatioii quickly the acute petrol shdrtaage might continue until December 1. Dollars to buy more petrol could only be obtained from the British Treasury and Australia was not in a position to spend any more dollars. In a press interview Mr. Ohifley said that the Government was sounding out the position regarding a dollar loan but that to float a loan at present on the New York market would be to accept an absolutely riiinous rats of intefdst. He did not think Sif Stafford Cfipps would approve of such a loan.
