White Flannels And Blazers Appear As Summer Sport Takes Over

With the changing over of the seasons, white .sports wear and blazers are now coming into their own on the sports fields throughout the Horowhenua. During the last two weekends many tennis and bowling clubs have observed their official openings and during the next few weeks more clubs will follow.

Girls marching, a sport which had a large following last summer, | shows signs of being equaliy ; strong this year. The Horowhenua : Marching Association has eight , teams so far with prospects of | more being recruited. The Manawratu Centre championships will ! be held in Palmerston North, I probably in December. The North I Island championships will be ini Auckland on January 28. The local season will open with a dis- J play on November 12. Amateur athletics are hoping for a boom season. Last year saw rapid strides in the popularity of this sport and during the winter interest was maintained by the revival of road racing. The season opens on October 31. The Horowhenua Softball Association • has planned its opening

on October 29 on which date there will be a grand " field 'day with all district teams competing. The competitions will begin on the following Saturday, November 5. So-ifar there are seven men's, j four ' women's and two 'junior teams in. the field this season. Nothing is yet' known of Otaki 's | intentions. Foxton *will not be flelding teams. Cricket will not come into its own until after Labour weekend. The new pitch laid down at the Weraroa Reserve by the Levin Borough Council appears to be in good condition and will be a big improvement. The success of the New Zealand touring team will doubiless give cricket a new boost and infuse greater public interest, which for some years now has bPeh waning.
