Counties' Road Maintenance Problem

•The maintenance obligations of the Horowhenua County Council , in respect of the Ngatiawa and Rangiora Roads at the southem end of hte county .were discussed at this month's meeting of the council, held in Levin yesterday-. The' Hutt County Council wrote asking for the" Horowhenua coun- ' cil's approval to the expenditure of £530 on these roads,* £250 on the Ngatiawa Road and £280 ' for a priming coat-on the bitumined Rangiora Road. This letter prompted' the chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, to ask whether it was pot • tinje for the Horowhenua County to take over the maintenance of the former road, as' he felt it could be done more economically in view of the faet that the council's machinery was often in the locality. Hutt had made a similar request during the war, but at that time the labour and machinery position rendere'd the change over impossible. Horowhenua would' be expeoted to meet half the proposed expenditure and it would be a sizeable sum, said Mr. Colquhoun. In regard to" Rangiora Road, he did not think that it was in the Horowhenua County. It was a blind road and he could not . but speculate as t.o jusl how it came to be sealed in the first place. It was 'decided to refer the matter meanwhile to the councillor for the riding and the engineer for a full report before any further action was taken.
