Giant Septic Tank For State Houses
One of the largest individual sewerage systems in Levin is that v/hich will serve the new State housing block in Queen Street East. A private contracting firm is at present engaged in the work, the magnitude of which can be gauged from the fact that 1250 yards of sooil will he excavated in the course of laying the 1200 i'eet of drain involved in the major circuit. Through the pipes in these drains will flow the sewage from 33 units into a giant septic tank. Measuring 21 feet in length,. it is 10 feet wide and 11 feet deep. A soakage pit .of the same measurements is also provided for. In three days 750 feet of drain, with an average depth of four feet, has been dug and laid with piping. Owing to the stony nature of the ground, the task has been difficult and would have beei: impossible without the aid of a powerful motor-driven seoop. The drainage system will have a fall of one in 200 feet. At specified points in the construction six ma.nholes are provided to give access for inspection. 'When the majcr circuit has been completed a further 2000 *eet of piping will be required 'o com nect the individual units to it. 1
