All members who attended the monthly meeting t>f the- Levin Women's Institute were given a most interesting talk on South Africa by Mrs. Tomlinson, who had travelled extensively in that country. The speaker, who had been a teacher in numerous sohdols throughout the colony, described her many and varied experiences there. At the conciusion of her address Mrs. Tomlinson was accorded a vote of thanks by the meeting and presented wiih a small gift. There was a good attendance of, members and- visitors, and the president, Mrs. H. S. Powell, was in the chair. Arrangements for the half-yearly council meeting, to be held in the Regent Hall on October 19 were finalised, Mesdames Spencer and Johnson being elected as delegates. It was announced that the guest speaker at the meeting would be Miss Nelle Scanlan. The meeting decided to send the usual donation to the leper's Christmas fund. Arrangements Were made for the hire of a bus on October 26 to yisit Massey College. On this excursion members would be given the opportunity to see the cherry trees in bloom in the Palmerston North gardens. A parcel containing a large fruit cake and severai packets of suet had 3 been dispatched as a Christmas gift to the link in Englan'd, it was stated. Also, many gifts had been received for the annual institute Christmas party for inmates of the Levin Farm. The results of competitions were as follows: — Knitted tea cosy: Miss Dalton 1, Mesdames Ahern and Walthers 2 (equal), Mrs. Hall 3. Pikelets: Mrs. Ha.ll 1, Mrs. Walthers 2, Mrs. Sharp 3. Best vegetable: Mrs. Hudson 1, Mrs. Hall 2. Best bloom: Mrs. Edyvane 1, Mrs. Griffiths 2, Mrs. Benning 3. Best shrub: Mrs. Dalton 1, Mrs. Hall 2, Mrs. Benning 3. Members are reminded that from November and until further notice the monthly meetings will be held at St. Mary's Hall in the evenings.
