Cigarette Rutt In Bread. A Blaketown housewife found a cigarette butt in a loaf of bread at the weekend. She had cut a slice from the loaf to give a piece to her infant to chew when she discovered that the bread knife had cut through the centre of a butt embedded in the middle of the loaf. World Trip As Gift. A trip round the world as a graduation gift from his father. brought Mr. R. L. Carneiro, an American sWdent, to Auckland on i Saturday. Mr. Carneiro, . who j gained an arts degree 4n political I science at the University of Michi- | gan, has already visited Europe, | the Middle East, Asia, North : Africa and Australia. After spendi ing a few days in Auckland, he j will visit Rotorua and Napier. He I will leave for Sydney next Saturj day and will return to the United j States through the Netherland East Indies, the Philippines and Japan. Veteran Cow's Birthday. An amazing cow named, Barbara has just celebrated her 33rd birthday in excellent health. She is a Jersey-Shorthorn cross owned by Mr. S. T. Miller, of Taumarunui. In her lifetime she has had 29 calves, and she is beiieved to be the oldest cow ever known in New Zealand, as well as the mother of the largest family. Barbara was born on Mr. Miller's farm at Hikumutu. She had her first calf just before the end of the First World War. When Mr. Miller retlre'd from farming, he took Barbara to Taumarunui with j him.
iLottery Success. i A Hastings syndicate of three j publiQ accountants has won the ; first prize of £10,000 in the latest | overseas consultation. The memj bers of the syndicate are Messrs i J. A. Hogg, J. W. Laws and K. W. Dane, all of whom are employed in the accountancy firm of Messrs Harvey and Laws. The last-named two are married. They have been taking a ticket each week for j -about 18 monuhs under the nonii de-plume of "Two J.'s and A.K." During that period, by dispatching their investments in advance at the rate of £10 a time, they have been able to book the same ticket — number 23115 — in each consultation. Notornis Area. He had been informed on very good authority that the notornis had been seen in localities other than that in which it had been recently rediscovered, including the Doubtful Sound area and the Lake Hilda district, said the Mayor of Timaru (Mr. A. E. Hanan), who has. recently returned from a holiday visit to Lake Te Anau. In that area wild pigeons, tuis, bellbirds and wekas were now more numerous than they had been at any time during the last 20 years. Swamp turkeys and pukeko were now as .numerous as rabbits once were in those parts, said Mr. Hanan. There were still a lot of hares, but rabbits had come under better control there in recent years, he said. Purpose Of Fines. "The purpo&e of a fine is not a license fee for trafflc o (fences/' said Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., in the Christchurch Magistrate's Court when a motor|st was convicted of his 14th traffib offence. The chief traffic inspector to the Christchurch City Council (Mr. G. P. Kellar) said the oifender's excuse on this occasion for parking over the time limit was that he had a very important business deal to attend to, and if he let Jhls customer go he would lose the deal. Mr. Kellar said the motorist had been fine'd £4 for his last offence. The Magistrate: This deal must have been worth more than £4 to him. In the usual run of cases a small fine is sufficient to check offences, but where a man persists he must be fined with some severity. Defendant will he fined £5 and costs.
