Elections in Austria
Eeceived Monday, 8 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 10. Reuter's Vienna correspondent says the Austrian Government -coalition — Right Wing People 's Party and Sociaiist Party — retained a comfortable majority in the general eleetions. Results were: — People 's Party 77, Socialists 67, League of - Independents 16, Communists 5. The two main parties lost a few seats because of the campaign by the NeoNazi League of Independents which won 16 seats in its first Parliamentary election. The Associated Press correspondent says the election results show that Austria 's 4,000,000 voters have swung definitely to the Right. The strength. of the Right Wing League of Independents who went all out for the support of former Hitlerites, was unexpected but hardly more so than the loss of strength of the Socialists. In Vienna which is a Four-Powjer responsibility, the Socialists topped the poll. The Tass news agency correspondent in Vienna claiined that the eleetions were marked by " provocations and acts of teiror against the Left. " The correspondent added that there were many incidents in the British Zone where gangs patrolled the streets armed with rubber and oak clubs.
