Ship Reported Sinking In Pacific
Keeeived Tuesdav, 10.25 p.m. SUVA, Oct. 10. The motor vessel Awahou, 410 gross tons, owned by the Carr Shipping Conipany, Sydney, previously owned by the Union Manufacturing Company, Wellington, and prior to that by the Western Pacific High Commission, is repoi't- . ed to be in a sinking condition 200 miles north of Fiji. Captain Hay, in command, wirelessed for assistanee. The New Zeaiand Air Force at Laucala Bav, Suva, immediately sent a Catalina which contaeted the vessel. A message from the ship said the vessel was obviouslv sinking and sooner or later the crew would have to take to the boats. The weather fortunately was firie and cairn. Catalina planes from the N.Z. Air Force are maintaining contact with the vessel and at 9 o'clock tonight were still overhead. The Carpenter Line vessel Lakemba has been diverted to the rescue and is expected to arrive at 3 o'clock to morrow morning. The Fiji Government has also" sent the Dengei which will contact the Awahou at 10 a.m. and will take her in tow if still afloat. The vessel is loaded with empty oil drums which may assist buoyaney. There are seven passengers and a crew of 22. Two women are passengers.
