Up v to Wednesday evening over £100 worth of stamps had been sold by the local post ofOce. On the opening day the saies amounted to £91 10s,' the quota for the town being £72. Over £4 was contributed from saies made at the local school to the pupils. Few Whitebait Again. The whitebait in the Manawatu River seem to have gone into hiding again after the outstanding run earlier in the week. It is understood that on Tuesday over 400 lbs. of whitebait were taken from the river at the Paiaka area alone. Although flshermen have been on the banks for long periocLs since Tuesday, they report only very small catehes. The river is still rather dirty following the recent slight fresh. Aerial Photo Of Shannon. At present on display at the town clerk's offlce is an aerial panorama of the borough of Shannon. The photograph, which is. about four feet long and three feet wide, was taken in 1939 and displayed at the New Zealand . Centennial Exhibition. By studying the photograph it is possible to aiscertain the advancement - of the borough, especially the building activity, over the past ten years. It is the intention of the council to have the photograph framed and hung in the Council Chambers. The publie are invited to inspect the photograph. Low Rate Arrears. The fact that Shannon's ratepayers are prompt in meeting their co.mmitments was mentioned by the' town clerk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, when he reported to members of the council at Tuesday evening's meeting that the total rate arrears for the borough amounted to £4 11s 9d, this amount being the dues of only one ratepayer. The town clerk said he hoped to receive this' amount wi^hin the next week, thus giving the borough a clean rating sheet. Members of the council expressed pleasure at the prompt payment of rates by local citizens, New Library Books. Reporting on library matters at Tuesday evening's meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, Cr. R. S. Downes, acting-chairman of the library committee, advised. that ■his committee had decided to purchase a number of new books. These should be. on the shelvea within the next few days. Cr. Downes said that the publie had supported the library very well over the winter, but he predicted a drop in the peak of rentals and reading over the summer. The new books should prove an incentive to maintaining publie interest, he conclude'd.
