Fine Day Favours Croquet Club's Opening
The official opening of the Otaki Municipal Croquet Club was held on Wednesday in fine weather and before a very representative gathering. Members from Palmerston North, Levin, Manakau and Otaki clubs were present. Apologies were received from the Paraparaumu and Paekakariki clubs, and also from Mesdames Morton, Evans, Lowry, "Nicolson, Barber, Bowey and H. Taylor. The president, Mrs. Alex. Wilson, welcomed the visitors and expressed her pleasure at so many being present, and called on Mrs. B. McMurray, president of the Manawatu Association, to open the lawns. Mrs. McMurray congratulated the club on its splendid array of beautiful trophies to be played for during the season and also on the good s'howing the club had made at - inter-elub matches in Palmerston North last year. She invited members to the Manawatu tournament in February and also to watch the North Island championships, which are to be held in Palmerston North this year. Mrs. McMurray said it was the intention of some of - the officials of the association to visit the Southern clubs this year. Mrs. Wilson then placed the ball and Mrs. McMurray drove it through the first hoop and declared the greens open , for play. Mesdames T. W. Synnotfand Mrs. E. Cobb presented Mesdames McMurray and Wilson with beautiful shoulder sprays. Competitions were then played, the winners being Mesdames" Gilmour, E. Bryant, W. Bryant and Wood. The coveted Ohristmas cake prize was won by Mrs. Tully, A beautiful liome-made afternoon tea was then served.
