Matters' pertaining to the ad---ministration of the borough were discussed :at the meeting of the Shannon Borough Council -on Tuesday evening, when the Mayor (Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald) presided over Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, R. S. Downes, C. M. Cronquest, L. G. Sayer and C: G. Wishart. An apology for absence was received from Cr. H. Aitchison. In a lettef to the council, Cr, H. L. Norris, who is at present on leave of absence on account of illness, stated that he WUs how very much improved in health, but it would be a few weeks yet before he- woul'd be ret'ufning to Shannon. The town clerk was directed to inform cr. Norris that leave had been granted ' him at an earlier meeting and that the Mayor and council were pleased to hear that he was now improving in health. The Shannon Cricket Club applied fdr permission to use the domain during the coming season. On the motion of Cr. Bateman, permission was granted. A " borough resident asked that a more direct water supply connection from the main to the boundary of his Stafford Street property be ma'de. It was agreed to alter the connection at a cost of 30s. A reply to the council's representations for support for a maternity hospital was received from the Horowhenua County Council, which stated that the representations were duly noted at a recent meeting of his council and the information was beihg passed on to the electors' repres^ntatives on the Hospital Board. It was decided that the town clerk contact Mr. V. J. Cottle, who is th,e council's representative on the board, and ask him what progress has been made- with the proposal. Two reports on the roadmah's work for the past four weeks Were read and received by the council. After receiving a report from the sanitation inspector on the proposed work at the railway stock yards and the methods to be adopted to improve and eliminate as far as possible any -.pollution of the streahi at t'he southern end of Nathan Terrace, it was left to the town clerk to obtain further information. from the Railways Department. On the motion of the Mayor, it Was resolVed to purchase health stamps to the value of £6. After a discussion on cemetery affairs, it was agreed that the ailocatioh of cemetery plots be left in the hands of Cr. Clayton, chairman of the cemetery committee, and the town clerk. Cr. Clayton, reporting on domain matters, stated that 15 loads of spoil had been soread on the domain. A donation of grass seed had been received and Mr. F. C. Peach was arranging to have hartoWs used on the grounds, The chairman of the building committee, Cr. Bateman, reported that an application tabled in connection with improvements to, a local shop were in order and on his motion the necessary permit was granted for the work. Cr. Bateman also reported that a new industry, a box making factory, •had. commeneed operations in the town, The Chairman of the works committee, Cr. Sayer, reported that -during his absence his committee had carried on and general maintehance work had been continued. There were several water supply matters requiring attention. Arrangements for special sanitation matters were left in the hands of Cr. Sayer, Drainage attention at the upper end of Ballance Street Was also left to him. it was reSolved that the next meeting of the council be held in three weeks' time, Tuesday, October 25. Accounts amounting to £2008 lfs 8d Were passed for payment.
