G. Barclay Emerges Winner Of Nicholson Cup

(By "Duffer") In the final round of the Nicholson Cup , competition, played on Saturday by members of- the Levin Golf Club, George Barclay returned a net 72 t© gain a clear lead of four strokes and the trophy. All praise is due to George on his fine effort as he was playing under the double handicap of an arm injury sustained last week and a shortage of two of his clubs, which had been remove'd by the offspring. Merv. Wilson returned a 74 to place him in second place. The' seven * best scores in the competition were:— G. Barclay, 72,. 68, 72—212; M. Wilson, 76, 66 74 —216; T: Couiie, 74, 69, 74— 217; F. Carrington, 72, 74, 74 — 220; H. D. Richards, 74, 71, 77—222; A. Bennett, 76, 78, 71—225; J. Tomlinson, 78, 78, 72 — 227. Best round recorded on the day came from the pillar of the club, Bill Ogier, whose card read 82, 14 — 68, closely followed by Tom Ecclesfield with 89,- 19 — 70, and Bill Clark and Stuart Gledhill with a net 72 each. A. Saunders was just behind with a par card of 73. playing from his new handicap. The best gross round was W.G.'s 77. Intermediate Title Decided. The intermediate championship final was 'played also owing to the fact that one of the contestants will not be available next weekend, having pessimistically arranged a holiday, never expecting to make the final. "Duffer's" dark horse, Jim Corbishley, won the title from David Tomlinson, the pessimist. It was a good battle with both playing golf below handicap. David was never up. but was never far behind. Going in to lunch Jim was -two up. David could not better this position in the afternoon round, Jim gradually 'drawing away to finish Ihe game six and four. •The main interest now centres on the other two championship games to be played on Saturday. "W.G.'s" round of 77 and T. Ecclesfield's 89 shows that one' of the contenders in each grade is on the "b'all. B. J. Eagar and R. A. Jones are keeping their form a dark secret and did not return cards. Buckley Tournament. No game is schedule'd at Levin for next Saturday, but "our Buckley neighbours are holding a twcday tournament and those who can make the trip are assured of a good weekend's golf, with some handy little mementoes for those who are good enough to win them. Post entries are being accepted and players may enter for one or both days.
