NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 4. Support for the endeavours ' of surveyors in the employ of the State, to a.chieve salarv status considered by
cnem to oe commensurate with their professional statns and responsibilities, was accorded by the New Zealand Institnte of Surveyors at the qnnual eonference at New Plvmouth todav. The conference reeommended its council to take up the matter with the authorities eoneerned. The question was dealt with at length bv the Survevor-General. l\Tr. R. G. Dick, during a discussion on the following motion wliieh was carried: — "That taking into consideration tlie serious arrears of urgent survev works which are required as the basis for the development of the resources of the Dominion, this conference views with coneern the inadequacy of the numerical strength of the field staff of the Lands gnd Survey Department and therefore its inability to cope with these urgent commitments, and in light of informa.tipn placed before this conference. urges tha co'uTicii to take immediate steps to approach the authorities eoneerned with the ob.iect of obtaining a substantial increase in salaries paid to survevors in the public service and thus reduce losses caused by resignations and make Careers and prospects for reeruitment of 1 surveyors more attractive. " >
