Fined For Failing To Make Returns Of Income
♦ — Defeiidant, a hookmaker, earned £7179 between 1941 and 1948, said Mr. G. I. McGregor in the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North this week, when James LeonardWehb, commission agent, faced six charges of failing to make a return of income. Mr. J. R. Hcrd S.M., fined Ylebb £5 on each charge, costs on each counc being 10s. Webb was ordered" to pay a ; solicitor's fee of £1 11s 6d on the first Charge and £1 ls qn each of the other five. Mr. McGregor told the Court that over the period of years Webb was liable to £951 income tax and a social security charge of £550. For defendant, Mr. J. A. L. Bennett said Webb had been a bookmaker in Levin for some time and failed to "furnish retmms of income because his business was illegal and he did not know tcTwhat extent the details revealed in the returns would be kept secret. Not long after the Depa,rtment began investigations the polic'e took action against him for bookmaking. He was no longer a cdmmission agent.
