Shannon School's Activities
The 'headmaster of the Shannon school, Mr. F. O. Burtt, reported on activiaes for the month of September to last evening's ' meeting of the school committee as follows: — "The sehopl roll at the end of the month sfcood at 168 'b,oys and 157 girls, a total of 325 pupils. The roll for the first ( four weeks of Septemher, on which period the school is graded for the coming year, a,veraged 324.5. As the number required for the appointment of an additional teacher Is 321, the school' will be; up-gra'ded a subgrade and an additional male teacher will be appointed to the staff next year. The attendance for the month a,veraged 153 boys and 149 girls. There were 18 pupils admitted and four wibhdrawn during the month. "The district nurse, Sister MacDonald, carried out her routine inspection of the pupils and the district health officer, Mr. W. J. Guinan, inspected the school. The dental elinic was inspected by Mrs. Smethurst, dental inspector, and the annual inspection of the school was carried out for two two dasy by Messrs Sbubbs, McClune and O'Connor, of the school inspection staff. * "The children's entries in the calf club eompetition were marked with the Horowhenua Boys' and Girls' Agricultural Club's mark by Messrs Bradey and Free, members of the school committee. Mr. Styles, of the archifcect's branch of the Education Board, spent an afternoon at the school in eonnection with building plans. As it is unlikely that the proposed additions to the school will be rea'dy before the seeond term of next year, it may be necessary to make provision for a class to be taught in a hall for the first term. "The September meeting of the Parent-Teachers' Association was addressed by Mr. J. D. Campbell, superintendent of the Mangahao Power Station. The Oetober meeting will be held on Monday next and will be addressed by Mr. M. A. Nixon, of Palmerston North, who is tutor and organiser of adult education for Victoria University College. "The ' school owes its thanks to Messrs Shannon Motors for generously overhauling the motor mower and for offering to maintain thp mower free of charge in the future. Mr. F. Bradey is to be thanked for plants for the school's flower gardens."
