More Scientists Needed For Atomic Research
LONDON, Oct. 3. The Ministrv of Supplv is launehinc; a nation-witle campaign to recruit vouug men antl women for atomic research. A statement bv the Ministrv (leclarerl today: "Britain's atomic energy programme needs more voung scientists — men ard women chemists who can be trained to work on new problems and follow up hitherto undeveloped lines in atomic energy research." The statement said modern developments in atomic. energv "witl be responsible for great changes in techniques and equipments in the near fulure. " Tt added: "The iipmediatelv wide field of atomic research, and the fact that equipment at Government estab lishments is the most up to date in Europe, should lie attractive to keen workers anxious to develop their scope in research." The positions offered were permanent with salaries from £500 to £900 a year. The Dean of Canterbury (Dr. Hewlett Johnson) telling the Manchester peace committee today that he was not surprised to hear that the atomic bomb had bpen exploded in Russia, added: "I advise my Ameriean friends not to think thev have priority in the number of bombs." The De.tn said the Russians had not bragged about the bomb. The Russian people desired peace. "If peace broke out in Russia tomorrow, what a paean of praise would go up; but if peace | broke out in America, what a catag-i froplie of mass unemployment. " j
