Three famous brothers — Sir David Bone, former commodore of the Anchor Line, Sir Muirhead Bone, the noted black and white artist, and Mr. James Bone, for manv years London editor of the Manchester Guardian, boarded the former New Zealand sloop Wellington, now headquarterers of the Guild of Master Mariners, when Sir David Bone presented the guild with the wheel of the old sailing ship Otago, commanded in the later years of last century by Joseph Conrad, and described by him in his story, ' ' The Shadow Line." j The wheel was rescued from the hulk oPthe Otago, which is now lying in a creek near Derwent, Tasmania, by the Ameriean writer Christopher Morley, who sent it to Sir David Bone for presentation to the guild. In presenting the wheel, Sir David Bone recalled a conversation he had had with .Conrad, in which the famous Polish author said, "I am more British than you are — you are only British because you could not help it."
