Keen Demand For All Green Vegetables

Messrs Townsend and Paul, Lfrd., ' fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that there is a particuiarly keen demand for most lines of green vegetables, keenest enquiry being shown for spring cabbage, cauliflowers, lettuce and green peas. All other choice lines show an increase on eanier salesi Grapefruit is keenly scughc after owing to the shortage of overseas oranges. Hothouse tomatoes realised up to 5s 5d per pound. A keen enquiry was noticed for all vaaieties of flowers. Yardings of poultry have been light and there is a particularly keen demand for all prime birds. Quotations are as follows: — Vegetables: Asparagus, Is 4d to ls 8d; broad beans, ls 4d to ls 7d; hothouse beans, soringless, 5s 2d; peas, ls 3d to ls lld; beetroot, Ss to 12s; cabbage, 9s to 14s; lettuce, 20s to 39s; leeks, 5s to 7s; silverbeet, 5s to 12s; spinach, 18s to 21s 6d; celery, 21s 6d all cases; cauliflowers, 20s to 26s; marrows, 18s to 20s; swedes, 3s 6d to 7s all sacks; carrots, 4s to 7s; kumeras, 30s to 38s sugar bags; onions, 16s; parsnips, 12s to 15s cwts.; triumble pumpkins, 32s to 41s sacks; new potatoes, ceiling price; parsley, 4s to 8s; radish, 4d to 8d; chinese cabbage, ls bunch; rhubarb, 3s 6d to 4s 6d heaps. Poultry: White Leghorn hens, 4s to 6s 6d; Biack Orpington hens, 8s 6d to 12s 6d; White Leghorn roosters, 4s to 5s 3d; Black Orpington roosters, 5s 6d to 7s; guinea fowls, 18s; turkeys, 2s 3d to 2s 4d per lb. live weight; young White Leghorn cockerels, 5s 9d each; young coloured ducks, 18s 6d to 22s. Flowers: Tulips, 2s to 6s; poppies, 3s to 7s; carnations, 24s to 36s; daffodils, 10s to 20s per gross; baronia, ls; polyanthus, ls per bunch; violets, 3s 9d to 6s per dozen bunches.
