Good Progress Made With State Houses

. — Twenty-seven units completed in 13 months working time has been the result to date of the ] activities Of . a contracting firm ( working on State house contracts , in Levin. The foreman said yes- , terday that a further six could be 1 added if the uncompleted ones on which they are at present, working were collated. The workmen on 1 the job varied in numbers, but ; the average would be 20 men. At present the staff was down to 15 ; or 16. * The firm is at present operating in the Queen Street-Queenwood : Road block on which there will finally be 35 units. The firm, however, has the contract for only 20 of these, as it has received instructions to move on to Wanganui. So far six units of this blo.ck are ready for ihe painter and 14 are in the framework stage with some seven of these being closed in. The foreman estimated that hy Christmas the houses in 'he unit would not be far off completion. No water or drainage had as yet been installed in the block, and none of the houses could be occupied until this was done. This work was, however, out of the firm's hands. In the Winchester Street block on which the firm had been working 19 had been handed over to the State A'dvances of the 22 contracted for, and the other three would be ready next week. There were 17 people actually living in the block, he added.
