Charged With Theft Of Large Sum

AUCKLAND, Sept.- 29.! Two men pleaded not guilty when they were jointly charged before Mr. S. L. Patprson, S.M., with stealing £3438' from Dominion Breweries Ltd., between Marc-h 20, 1948, and July 14, 1949. They were Albert William Whyte, aged 59, aecountant (Mr. Henry), ancl Basii David Smith, aged 55, dealer (Mr. Rottinson). Early in 1948, said Senior Deteetive Hay, the brewery had difficulty in obtaining cardboard cartons in which to pack bottles of beer and it was decided to use sugar bags in place of cartons. Whyte, who was eihployed at the brewery, was authorised to buy bags from Smith who, when he delivered the bags, presented a docket which was signeo by one of the staff. Pavment was made in respect of the quantities shown on the dockets. Senior Deteetive Hay sai-o the prosecution contended that the dockets were falsified between the time they were signed and when they were presented for payment. Photographs showing alterations would be producea. The brewery, when checking its stocks of bags, found thei;e was a shortage 0f more than 104,000. After hearing evidence, the Magistrate committed the two accused to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail of £25u with a surety of a similar amount, was allowed in each case.
