Italy To Build Up Her Armed Forces
ROME, Sept. 28. Italy "is to increase her army to full treaty strength and start building a new fleet on January 1. Defence Minister Randolfo Pacciardi, announcing thi? in the Chamber of Deputies, said the fleet would inelude cruisers, destroyers and snfaller craft and that Italy was planning to biiy the latest type of 'jet fighters to .modernise her air force. Signor Pacciardi said t^i-e army would be inc'reased to the limit of 250,000 inclnding soldiers and armed police. Infantrv divisions would be increased from eight to twelve, some armoured. Italy 'a armed forces would cost an estimated £20,000, 000 more during 1949-50 than last year. He added that Italy was also negotiating for licences to build jet planes. The prohibitive clause of the Ttalian peace treaty expires next year. The treaty permitted Italy to retain flve cruisers, of which two will be renOvated under the new programmo, four destroyers, 16 torpodo boats, 19 corvettos and various smaller craft and supplv and service ships. The building programme is expectod to take about five years.
