Gaol For Motorist Who Was Not Sober
CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 26. "I wonder that you had the nerve to take any liquor in view of that entry on your card," saiid Mr Rex C. Abernethy S.M. in the Magistrate 's Conrt when senteneing to three weeks' imprisonment, Arthur Percy Ford, aged 28, carpenter, against whom two charges arising out of a eollision in Manchester Street on Saturday night, were pxeferred. "You might have killed somebody again, " the Magistrate added. For failing to stop after the apeident he was flned £6. Ford's licence was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another for two years. When Mr. 0. V. Lester, on Ford's behalf, suggested ..caneellation of his licence over an extended period to meet the offenee, the Magistratfe said: "I have deeided in view of Ford's previous eonvietion, that he will go to gaol. H*e is a menaee. " The Magistrate added that in 1941 Ford was sentenced to six months'' imprisonment on a charge of negligent driving causing death.
