National Party Ladies Have Social Afternoon
The ladies' bfanch of the Levin National Party held a social afternoon iri St. Mafy's Hail this week. Despite verv cold weather, the functipri WUS well attended and the " brlng-and-buy sfall did torisk business. Guest speaker was Mrs. P. Gillingham, of Upper Hutt, who was mfroduced by the chairwoman, Mrs. W. Bull. Mrs,. Gillirigham gaye a riiost inlefesting address based on sub— jppts which wpr? of particular eoncern to women. She spoke of the declining valuo of the .New Zeaiand pound and shortages of goods which existed today. "The speakpr refprred to the high wages being paid for unskilled abour and said that this 'did nob induce the youth of the country to take UP trades when -an apprentice received less in- wagea than a labourer. The high cost of living was causing many wives to go out and work to earn extra moneyfor the home. All these difflculties mitigatfid against making a happy nation. At the conclusio'n a vote of thanks, moVed by Miss H. E. Bowen and aeeonded by Mrs. G. A. ^ebig, was accprded ihe speaker. Afternbori tea wgs then dispensed by the ladies' comnfittee.
