Sole Cricket Selector Not Favoured
The three-man committee for the selection of senior representative teams is to be retained for the coming season by the Horowhenua " Cricket Association. A motion put forward at the association's annuai meeting on Tuesday night that a sole selector be appcinted was defeated. Bringing the motion forward, Mr. A. Nicols (Weraroa) remarkea that he had in mind the appoin'tment of a player as sole selector. Secon'ding the motion, Mr. H. Judd (Old Boys) ' supported the view that a sole selector shou-d be a player. He did not think that a player cou.d satisfactorily undertake the task 'of sole selector, said Mr. T, Roach (Shannon), as he cou.d not hope to k'ep abreast of the form of all players. He thbught Gha^ if a soie se ector was appointed he should be a non-play-mg member. Mr. G. Andrews (College) recaned a previous season when the association had appointed a sole selector and remarked that the system had been sati?factory. Support for a selection committee of three members came from Mr. H. Rice. He commented that this removed any possibility of a player being overiooked, a danger with a so e selector. Mr. K. Rodgers (Foxton) considered that lepresemative play was taken too lightiy by prayers. He dep.ofed the fact that too many players 'declined to take p 3U't in games after being chosen oecause of race meetings and club games. He would prefer a sole selector if it was possible to obtain the services of ■ a non-p'ayer who could travel. the district and see the games, said Mr. S. Newth (Foxton) . Last season the three members of the selection committee had been representative players, said . Mr. C. E. Barr-.ud (Old Boys). While he had heard no criticism of the selections made, he thought that a committee composed of prayers who were themselves representatives was open to it. That was another reason in favour of a sole selector. Mr. J. McNeile (Shannon): It wou d take a sole selector some time to see all the teams piaying. Having a committee of three obviates any difficulty in that direction. Mr. Rice pointed out that if a sole selector was a piaying member he would not see all the players in action sufficiently early in' the season to choose his team. Following further brief discussion the motion was put to the meeting and lost.
