Extensive Housing Scheme At Linton

An extensive housing eonstrtl.ction programrne involving the erection of a minimum of 104 houses has been started in the vicinity of Linton Militafy Caxnp and will be pushed ahead as fas,t as the manpower and materials situation will permit. , Twenty-six units are in the course of construetion and are expeeted to be completed in about six months. An ad- : ditional '78 houses are to be started shortly. It is believed that the Army Uepartment may require more houses later. The housing projeet has ra^ised the problem of educational faeilities for the new area and at a meeting of the Wanganui Education Board yesterday the secretary (Mr Gr. N. Boulton) was*1 asked to prepare a report on the position and submit it to the next meeting. With a minimum of 104 houses at the eamp settlement there would probably be.a school population of about 60-70 children who, with the 18 at pre8ent being conveyed to Linton Schooi, would necessitate the establishment of a two-bus conveyauce service. This would involve the erection of an additional classroom at Linton School but if the new settlement grows beyond 104 houses a further classroom probabiy would be needed. The -education board 's apparent aiternatives are to extend the prescnt Linton School of three classrooms and provide an sdditional conveyance service for the chilflren of the new settlement, ereot an entirely separate aC.iooat the new settlenunt, or erect a scuoo midway between the settlement and Linton School to acter for both settlements.
