Subsidy Sought For August Flood Repairs
A dismal picture wafc painted toy the consulting engineer to the Manawatu-Oroua, River Board, Mr. H. R. Farqubar, in his reporb: to the board last Thursday on the damage caused by floods during August. As a result the board decided to apply for a £3 for £1 subsidy for flood repair work. to be effected. Areas ■ concerning local settlers which the engineer dealt with were: — Te Maire: There was extensive seepage through and under the stopbank where it crossed the oldTe Maire Lagoon and the flood'gate was washed out. To streng-' then this weak place construction of a bankette on the land side was required. Denton's protection: Replacement was necessary." Pigott's crater: There was consideTable seepage and further slipping of the5x land side toe of the stopbank into the crater caused by the 1939 flood. A ^breach at this point would be serious for Moutoa. Removal of the menace is recommended by reconstructing the stopbank on the land side, costing £320, and setting the bank further from the crater on the river side at a cost of £200. This would make discharge between centre lines " of the stopbank nine chains. Moutoa estate: Tre following points were -threatened by erosion and required the setting back of stopbanks: Spring's spillway, 20 feet to eroding face; below Ol'dfield's floodgate; below Kari spillway; 20 chains below Paiaka floodgate; Langley's , floodgate both above and below; diagonal breaches. Also at Paiaka Camp adjacent to the buildings, willows at the river edge slipped over a face of 12 chains.
